We can offer a personalised English programme using EAL (English as an additional language).

The programme is closely planned with class teachers to ensure pupils improve their English in tandem with the primary curriculum and are fully integrated into mainstream lessons as quickly as possible. The programme is developed around the principle that language develops best when used in purposeful contexts across the curriculum. Emphasis is given to all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing, using a mixture of in-class support and/or separate specialist teaching.

EAL teaching takes place during literacy time in either five-hour or two-hour sessions per week; dependent upon the pupil's level of English. An English assessment is carried out and agreed for each pupil prior to or upon entry to school.

Once students progress sufficiently, access to the mainstream curriculum is expected. As soon as applicable, EAL support is reduced and in many cases discontinued. More than 80% of all EAL or Intensive English students in 2018-2019 dropped or reduced their support by the end of the year.

If you have any additional questions or would like to know more about this programme please contact the Registrar.
