The Modern Foreign Languages Department was delighted to welcome Professor Eric Robertson, a distinguished Guest Speaker for a thought-provoking lecture on Comparative Literature and the Liberal Arts. Attended by all French, German and Spanish A Level students, alongside members of the MFL teaching team, the event offered students a valuable opportunity to experience the atmosphere and intellectual rigour of a Higher Education lecture.
The speaker delivered an engaging and dynamic presentation, combining academic depth with warmth and humour. Through a wide range of concrete and accessible examples, students were introduced to the richness and complexity of language, literature and cultural interpretation. The lecture explored the concept of translingualism – a notion particularly resonant within the international environment of the BSP community – encouraging students to reflect on the ways in which languages interact, shape identity and influence our understanding of the world.
Students demonstrated exemplary attentiveness and intellectual curiosity throughout the session. Their thoughtful participation contributed to a stimulating academic atmosphere, which the speaker warmly acknowledged and greatly appreciated. He expressed how pleased he was by both the high level of student engagement and the warm welcome he received from the school community.
