Our Battlefields tour vividly brought history to life as we explored some of the most powerful and poignant sites of the Somme. We began at the Thiepval Memorial, where, despite a torrential downpour, pupils were able to reflect on the immense scale of loss, standing before the names of over 73,000 soldiers commemorated as missing. Mr E enriched this visit through the use of war poetry, helping to evoke the emotions and experiences of those who fought, and adding a powerful, human dimension to the memorial.

We then made our way through Thiepval Wood, setting the scene for the events of 1916. Here, Austin guided us through the trenches, offering expert insight into the realities faced by soldiers on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. His commentary enabled pupils to gain a deeper understanding of the conditions, challenges, and courage of those involved.

Our journey continued to the Newfoundland Memorial, where students saw first-hand how close opposing trenches were. This provided a striking perspective on the danger faced by soldiers and the lasting impact of the conflict on the landscape.

We concluded our tour at the dramatic Lochnagar Crater, where pupils were able to appreciate the sheer scale and destructive power of underground mining, and its significant role in the opening moments of the battle.

We would like to commend our pupils for their exemplary behaviour and genuine interest throughout the trip and to extend our sincere thanks to the staff for their support in making this trip possible.
