On Thursday, Year 4 children embarked on an exciting adventure to Biotropica, where our geography lessons on rainforests sprang to life! As soon as we stepped inside the giant tropical dome, we were greeted by warm, humid air and the sounds of waterfalls, not to mention the array of colourful plants and animals all around us.
Our guides took us on a special tour of the rainforest animals — but this was not just any tour! We learned what makes rainforests so special and how we can protect them and our planet for the future.
The children met a wide range of creatures, including snakes, frogs, birds, sloths, monkeys and anteaters. As we explored, our guide discussed the many dangers these animals face with us such as deforestation, pollution and the illegal wildlife trade. The Year 4s, who were already very knowledgeable, were shocked to learn how the everyday choices people make can affect animals living thousands of kilometres away.
However, the trip was also full of hope. The children discovered that small changes can make a big difference:
- avoiding products made from animal skins (no snakeskin shoes!);
- using a reusable bottle or flask instead of plastic bottles,
- not wasting water;
- buying food that is produced locally;
- keeping our rivers and oceans clean.
Each of these ideas was linked directly to the animals we saw and the rainforest environments we have been studying this term. The children had lots of thoughtful questions and brilliant ideas about how they could help protect the planet.
By the end of the visit, Year 4 children had left Biotropica feeling inspired and curious with a wealth of new knowledge. More importantly, they left as young conservationists, ready to take care of our world and all its creatures.
It was a truly amazing day, filled with learning, wonder and plenty of rainforest magic!
