As part of our local area study, Year 2 are exploring the town of Croissy-sur-Seine. This week, we walked into the town, taking care to look both ways when crossing roads. Once there, we completed three activities: a traffic survey, a shop survey and a visit to the boulangerie, which the children loved. There was a lot of traffic, especially cars! After completing our tasks, we walked down to the riverside park where we played with our friends and had our picnic lunch. Everyone had a great day out.

C: “I loved going to the park and playing survival games with everyone.”

E: “I liked going to the park because I could play with my friends.”

F: “I loved buying a pain au chocolat from the boulangerie.”

A: “I loved the trip because we got to go into the bakery.”

H: “I enjoyed counting the traffic with my friends. We counted 96 cars in 15 minutes!”

Mrs Banyard visited Year 2 and talked to them about what shopping was like when she was a little girl. Year 2 has been learning about changes to shopping habits since the 1950s. Mrs Banyard remembers going shopping with her mother and asking the shopkeeper for the different foods they needed. Butter was cut from a large slab and served in paper wrapping. Sugar was measured out and put into a bag. She also recalled how exciting it was to visit a supermarket for the first time and be able to pick what you wanted from the shelves without having to queue up and ask for it. However, she also pointed out that shopping is lonelier today. When you go to the supermarket, you no longer have to talk to anyone as you can pay at a self-service counter or order online. When she was young, she spoke to many different people who often asked about her family members. It was much more personal.

Thank you Mrs Banyard for talking to us.

The Year 2 children have been learning to code BlueBots and make them move along a certain path. They then created our own town and added shops based on our recent shop survey. They also created a code to make our Bluebots navigate our created towns. Year 2 enjoyed working on this project.
