On April Fools’ Day, we all enjoy playing jokes on one another, and many of these jokes have moved online. It can be surprisingly easy to be fooled by flying penguins and miniature pet hippos on the internet! This half term, the Junior School’s online safety topic, ‘Managing Online Information’, is equipping children with the skills to critically analyse the content they encounter online.

Year 6 took part in a lively debate about the persuasive design used in online games and websites, while Year 5 explored how stereotypes are represented online. These are challenging topics for young children, but vitally important ones. Children who play online games or use social media at home will almost certainly encounter persuasive design and stereotypes.

We teach critical thinking throughout our curriculum, not just in online safety lessons, but also in subjects such as maths, science and English. We are committed to equipping children with the lifelong learning skills they need to succeed, encouraging them to consider not only what they learn, but also how they learn.
