6th Form History and Politics students enjoyed a very interesting trip to the British Embassy last Friday.

We were given a fun fact tour by Ben Newick, the butler who arrived at the Embassy on 25th January 1978, the same day President Zelensky was born – something he mentioned in passing to the Ukrainian President when he came to the Embassy!

We also enjoyed a Q&A session with Andrew Dalgleish, Deputy Head of Mission, Laura McCambridge, Head of Economic and Political Affairs and Dylan Bonfils, Political Officer, Bilateral & Domestic Politics Team.

Students really appreciated the whole experience, which was fascinating from a political and careers point of view.

See some of the Year 12 students’ thoughts below:

“Our trip to the embassy was very insightful. We met three prominent diplomatic figures who expanded our knowledge on the inner workings of the Embassy and what being a diplomat typically entails. Finally, we were given the opportunity to sit on 200-year-old furniture, which was less comfy than it looked!”

“The building had beautiful architecture, and the experience was unique and extremely insightful into careers and day-to-day work at the Embassy.”

“The trip was a rich experience, both in history and current affairs. It allowed for first-hand accounts of life on the international political scene, and insight into the rich history between France and the UK. It was interesting to hear about how critical decisions are taken by the world’s political pioneers, and to hear from those working on the periphery of these people, like the legendary Ben the butler.”

“Our visit to the British Embassy was extremely interesting and educational. We were given the opportunity to ask questions which allowed us to have a clearer understanding of political life at the Embassy.”
