On Wednesday, Year One children were very pleased to welcome many of their parents who came to join us for an afternoon focusing on ‘Computer Science and Digital Literacy’. We split into two groups for the activities and swapped at playtime after enjoying a delicious treat prepared by the children for their visitors.
As our learning in English has been focused on the ‘Paddington’ stories, we all thought that marmalade sandwiches would be the most perfect snack and the afternoon break gave parents the chance to look at our writing books to see some of the work that their children have been doing.
In the Computer Suite, everyone used their individual details to log in and they enjoyed exploring the Purple Mash program, showing off their skills with a mouse as they opened and closed programs, searched for topics, drew pictures, typed a sentence saved or printed their work.
Children also programmed the BeeBots to move forwards, backwards, left or right on a grid and enjoyed challenging their parents to do the same, carefully counting how many commands they needed to input to move the BeeBot in different directions. Once everyone had plenty of fun with that, children logged into the iPads so that they could take photos which were then imported into a PicCollage. Background colours and details were added before the finished result was airdropped to the teacher’s iPad ready to be printed.
It was a lovely afternoon and we would like to thank all of those parents who were able to join us. We hope you all enjoyed yourselves!
