This week, the Junior School celebrated Safer Internet Day 2026. This year’s theme was: ‘Smart Tech, Safe Choices: Exploring the Safe and Responsible Use of AI’. All of the Junior School children, from our youngest in Reception to our oldest in Years 5 and 6, participated in the day to raise awareness.

During Friday’s Assembly, Mrs Carralón spoke to the children about artificial intelligence, explaining that AI platforms are so powerful that they can learn, reason and make suggestions or decisions just like humans do. We discussed how difficult it can be to make a decision and how we sometimes make the wrong choice. This emphasises the importance of using AI in an ethical way and thinking critically about its responses.

At lunchtime, the Digital Literacy Club continued this conversation, using an AI platform to test whether its responses were ethical and free from bias.

The younger children discovered that AI is like a highly intelligent robot that learns from its mistakes, much like children do. Year 3 children drew what they thought AI looked like and spent time talking about screen time and age-appropriate apps. Year 5 children discussed the amazing things that AI can do but also began to think about how it can be dangerous. The older children enjoyed trying to identify real and fake images and information.
