Year 7 pupils competed in our annual STEM bridge-building project, which started when we came back to school in January. The pupils were placed into groups within their House, and given three lessons to research, design and build a bridge made of only cardboard, paper straws, tape and wire. Following the build, Mr Porter took great pleasure in conducting some destructive testing to find out how much weight each bridge could hold.
Competition day on Monday was highly anticipated, noisy, exciting and… did we mention noisy?
D’Artagnan created an excellent set of bridges overall and thoroughly deserved the title of winning House, holding a combined weight of 2.2kg. In 2nd place was Porthos and in 3rd place Aramis. Huge congratulations go to the winning group who won a bar of Toblerone each for their efforts.
Finally, look out for a return to this competition later in the year. We are already planning to get the Year 7s to try this project again to see what they have learnt, and if they can improve on their designs.
