On Tuesday afternoon, EYFS children visited the French école maternelle Les Cerisiers under a bright and sunny sky. Full of excitement, they met French children to celebrate la Galette des Rois together.

The afternoon began with the children making their own galette, which they took back to school to enjoy the following day. They also had the chance to taste a delicious galette that had been prepared by the children of Les Cerisiers the day before.

After the visit, they enjoyed the much-loved French story Roule Galette, followed by time to play together before walking back to school. They were tired but very happy after such a special experience at a French school.

One pupil was especially delighted to have made a new friend and is looking forward to the French children visiting us in return so that she can play with her again.

To celebrate the start of the New Year, children from all year groups learnt how to say and sing ‘Bonne année et bonne santé’ in French, and shared their hopes for the year ahead. They enjoyed making their own ‘Bonne Année’ cards and had great fun posing for photos in our class photo booth!

The Junior School children and French teachers would also like to take this opportunity to send a special message to our school community: “Nous vous souhaitons une excellente année 2026, pleine de joie, d’amour et de réussite.”

After learning about the Epiphany and how to make a galette, Years 1 and 2 baked their own, filling them with apple compote this time. They took the time to roll out two neat circles of puff pastry, spread the compote on one of them and remembered to place the fève inside before closing the galette with the other circle. They can’t wait to taste it and find out who will be the roi or reine.

The Year 5 children were delighted to receive their second letter from their pen pals at Jules Verne School. Their pen pals have made great progress with their English and were able to write about their Christmas holidays and New Year resolutions. Year 5 have already started working on their replies and will share their New Year wishes and resolutions, too.
