Did you know that there is an area filled with rubbish in the Pacific Ocean which is three times the size of France? Or that turtles eat plastic bags because they look like jellyfish? Or that many of the pieces of plastic in the ocean are so tiny that they enter our bodies when we eat fish?
After learning all these facts, and more, about the problem of plastic pollution, Year 3 children were keen to take action.
On Monday afternoon, we enjoyed a visit from local artist and environmental activist Janina Rossiter, who talked about how she uses art to share a positive vision for change.
Janina showed us how to use marbling and stippling techniques to create a picture of an ocean creature. Each creature symbolises a secret promise to take action to reduce the amount of plastic in our oceans.
For example, we could:
- Use cardboard boxes instead of party bags and paper baubles instead of balloons.
- Take a fabric bag when we go shopping.
- Fill a reusable metal bottle with tap water instead of buying bottled water.
- Use washable metal straws instead of plastic or paper ones.
- Buy in bulk to avoid single use packaging.
Will you join us in making a pledge to reduce plastic?
