This week, the children in our Nursery and Reception classes visited the school beehives.
They were greeted by a member of staff and the beekeeper, who told them lots of amazing facts about bees. The children stayed at a safe distance to observe the bees coming and going from their hive as they buzzed about collecting pollen.
Some children were lucky enough to get a close-up view when they put on protective clothing and joined the beekeeper as she searched for the queen bee. After tasting the delicious honey and learning how we can help bees in our own gardens, we headed home with a couple of pots of honey to enjoy back in the classroom.
The work of these incredible insects is so important, yet it is often taken for granted. They are part of the biodiversity on which we all depend for our survival. Let us appreciate and look after them.
