This has been an extremely exciting week in 2T. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) arrived in the classroom in the form of Spike, a Lego related STEM project.

The children were paired up and presented with a box of Lego, a battery and an iPad. The children had to follow the instructions and create different funfair rides using motors, cameras, and sensors.

They then had to link the iPad and battery by Bluetooth and then program their creation to move in different directions, and speeds, they could even program the lights to have a variety of colours and patterns.

Everyone enjoyed the various challenges including learning to work with a partner.

The final build was a free build; they had everything at their disposal and had to create a design and then program it to move.

Some found this much more challenging than others; some were creative in their ideas but unfortunately, they couldn’t quite work out how to build it so that it would move in the direction they had imagined.

We learned that engineers must get frustrated at times and that returning to the drawing board once more can be particularly challenging.

Two pupils stated that they were frustrated by being unable to create their imagined design. Another two loved the freedom to create and build what they wished.

However, in the end we all finally achieved a design and everyone agreed that it was a fun week and they can’t wait to do it again in the future. We do hope that you like our creations.
