The Knights of Year 4 journeyed last week to visit the medieval castle of Guédelon.
In the heart of Guédelon forest, in northern Burgundy, in an abandoned quarry, a team of master-builders have taken on the extraordinary challenge of building a 13th-century castle from scratch, using the technology and materials of the Middle Ages. Quarrymen, stonemasons, carpenter-joiners, woodcutters, blacksmiths, tilers, carters, rope makers and more are working together to revive heritage craft skills and to shed light on the world of medieval construction.
As we are discovering life in medieval times through our history topic, we went to see how it was done!
The children learnt about heraldry before designing their own coat of arms on a shield, they then had a medieval banquet followed by a wonderful evening of music and dancing. After a good night’s sleep, they were given a guided tour around Guédelon castle – the children were enthralled. Year 4 rounded off their visit with a lesson in stone masonry. It was a magical medieval adventure where everyone learnt a great deal and had a lot of medieval fun!
