Year 4 Viking Day

The Junior School was invaded by Vikings this week, when Year 4 enjoyed a day deepening their understanding of the lives and crafts of the Norse people. The children came to school in some super costumes, many of which were home-made and this added hugely to their excitement. As a homework activity, they had all made shields to bring with them for “warrior training”, where both their fitness and battle skills were improved. Mrs Carralón and Mrs De Lisle were both very impressed with the care and effort that was put into creating these and it was lovely to see how proud the children were of them.

After a talk from a visiting “weaver”, the children loved working on a piece of weaving of their own and worked hard to master the necessary skills. We then used clay to sculpt a Viking mask, using different techniques to mark, shape or join the clay for the required effects. The results were amazing, as I am sure you will agree!

To finish the day, Mr Potter played the role of a visiting storyteller and entertained the children with tales of adventure and excitement. It was a fantastic day and developed everyone’s understanding of life in the past.
