Politics students’ audience with our Patron, the British Ambassador
Just before the Easter holidays, the Year 12 and Year 13 Politics groups were given the chance to meet Dame Menna Rawlings, British Ambassador to France. It was a really lovely experience. We were lucky enough to have a fascinating tour of the ambassador’s residence, and then sat down for a question and answer session with the ambassador. She was surprisingly open with her responses, and really showed off the human side of diplomatic work. We were all made to feel comfortable and relaxed, and the ambassador provided some very interesting insight into the intricacies of life as a diplomat, as well as some great stories. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I hope it’s something that future Politics classes can experience as well.
Jenna, Year 13
On the Thursday prior to the holidays, the Year 12 & 13 Politics class had the opportunity to visit the British Ambassador’s residence and meet Dame Menna Rawlings. Studying A level Politics, it was fascinating to speak to a member of the Civil Service at the highest level. It is rare as students to see what we learn at school being directly applied to real life scenarios – yet during this visit we were given an account of politics in action. We were allowed to ask her a variety of questions ranging from Brexit all the way to who her most famous encounter was, all of which she answered very openly and in a relaxed manner. Her stories ranging from her early years as a diplomat working in Kenya to becoming the British Ambassador to France, personally cemented my interest in a possible future in politics. The Ambassador will be giving the speech at Prize Giving this year, and I am really looking forward to hearing what she will be sharing with us.
