Year 9 Battlefields Trip

The Year 9s spent two days visiting La Somme and Ypres, two of the most iconic sites of the Western Front. Among the highlights was a tour of Thiepval Wood, the staging post for the Ulster regiment on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Austin, our guide, is the great-grandson and grand-nephew of men who fought on 1st July 1916.  We also visited Passchendaele memorial museum, Tyne Cot Cemetery (the largest commonwealth cemetery in the world) and Thiepval memorial. The rain didn’t dampen Year 9’s spirits. It was a thought-provoking yet enjoyable way to end the school year.
