Tudor Day in Year 5
Wonderful smells drifted from the Year 5 corridor on Tuesday morning as the classrooms were transformed into Tudor workshops for the day. We discovered the traditional cures for a range of ailments, including smallpox, bubonic plague and gout. We didn’t have a hangman’s noose to rub on our foreheads to get rid of headaches, but we did make strongly-scented medicine bags using herbs like thyme, rosemary and lavender. The Tudors believed that warding off bad smells helped to keep nasty diseases at bay so we also made pomanders from oranges, cloves and lengths of red ribbon. In the afternoon, we painted lockets with miniature portraits of loved ones and celebrated with a delicious banquet, beginning of course with a toast to King Henry. (We wouldn’t have wanted our heads to be chopped off for treason!).
