Year 5 Navigators

This week we have set sail around the globe on an epic voyage with Sir Francis Drake, discovering new lands and charting unknown seas. Drama and artefacts have been used to retell this thrilling tale.

The crew from 5T have been hired after writing a letter of application to become navigators, seamen, cooks, carpenters, sailmakers, the barber surgeon, the cabin boy and even musicians.

We have already learned how to raise the anchor by turning the capstan, hoist and lower the sails following the boatswain’s whistle, scrub the decks, listen to a sea shanty and even walk the plank!

Prior to the voyage we have studied maps of what was known of the world four hundred years ago compared to today, learned about voyages of discovery and how they were prepared.

Next week we continue around the Cape of Good Hope, may encounter wild storms and even contemplate mutiny…
