Cambodia here we come…

As twelve of our Year 13 students along with three members of staff prepare to set off for Cambodia and our UWS schools, one of our students reflects on their upcoming journey:

“We are going to Cambodia to help teach those who have just started going to school, but what we learn from them will be so much more.
We all have our individual reasons for wanting to go to Cambodia, for me having a cultural and family background not dissimilar to Cambodia, the reasons for wanting to go are very personal.

I’m half Vietnamese, coming from Cambodia’s neighboring country I have seen similar effects of education or the lack thereof on the people there. Therefore, my emotional connection to Vietnam has perhaps helped me invest in the lives of the people we will meet, in their well-being and in their education. Having the chance to give and to gain a new perspective, to experience other cultures, to help in whatever small way we can, and as selfish as it may sound, to have our own lives enriched by those that we will meet are what I’m looking forward to. Alongside, of course, being able to bond with the children of Bak Kae and La Meuy who will apparently be shaking our hammocks at 6.30 in the morning, ready to start school!”
