Year 13 Physicists visit IRSN

Our Year 13 Physics students visited the Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN) in Le Vésinet. IRSN is a publicly funded body which conducts research into nuclear and radiological risks. One of the roles of IRSN is to monitor the levels of harmful ionising radiation in the environment especially in areas of particularly high risk e.g. around nuclear power stations.

Prior to the visit, the students prepared an experiment to investigate how gamma radiation decreases in intensity with distance. On arrival, they were given a safety talk to ensure that we would not be exposed to radiation. With the help of IRSN staff our students then carried out the experiment making full use of the state-of-the-art equipment available to them. The collected data has since been analysed back at School.

We are very grateful to IRSN for providing this amazing opportunity for our Physicists and for the very informative and relevant discussion around radiation and the environment.
