English is not my first language

Junior School
Many of our students, with many nationalities, are already proficient in English as a personal and academic language.
For those developing their English in a school context, we provide specialist support within the mainstream classroom and in small group or one-to-one EAL classes. We work with children and young people at all levels of English language development.
We can offer a personalised English programme using EAL (English as an additional language). The programme is closely planned with class teachers to ensure pupils improve their English in tandem with the primary curriculum and are fully integrated into mainstream lessons as quickly as possible. The programme is structured around the principle that language develops best when used in purposeful contexts across the curriculum. Emphasis is given to all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Where possible, lessons are carried out in literacy sessions and as part of our programme are encouraged to use their own language through the process of translanguaging.
If you have any additional questions or would like to know more about this programme please contact the Registrar.
