In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), writing begins with mark making. This is an important stage where children explore movement, creativity and communication.

First, our Nursery and Reception children develop their gross motor skills through large movements that strengthen their shoulders and arms. This gradually leads to a more controlled use of the wrists, hands and fingers, enabling them to hold writing tools correctly.

All activities are fun and engaging, and are linked to the children’s interests. These range from messy play and painting to outdoor mark making. It is through these experiences that children begin to write, learning to use marks and drawings to share their ideas.
