Our holistic approach at the BSP enables all students to meet their full potential, academic or otherwise. The BSP Junior School provides the following educational programme:
Nursery – Foundation Stage 1
Learning, development and care at the BSP Nursery is facilitated by a variety of activities that young children from the age of 3 years enjoy. Learning is based on both structured and free play giving the child a means of learning through discovery, development and investigation. Learning activities include language and number work, to role play, art and craft as well as sand and water. Pupils at the BSP are taught both English and French.
The BSP Nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Framework, part of the British Curriculum Guidance.
Reception – Foundation Stage 2
Our aim in the Reception Year is to develop confident, happy children who are eager to learn and to share their experiences with others in a safe and secure environment that encourages exploration and self-expression, so laying down a firm base for the years of education to come.
Our Reception Year staff use the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) framework as the basis for the children’s learning. The curriculum sets out the Early Learning Goals in each of these areas:
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Language and literacy
- Knowledge and skills in mathematics
- Knowledge and understanding of the world
- Physical development
- Creative development
In addition this busy programme is enriched by the same range of additional lessons as enjoyed by the older years. These include a daily French lesson, PE lessons (including weekly swimming) and music, all with our specialist staff.
Key Stage 1
At Key Stage 1 the subjects are English, Mathematics and Science together with Information Communication Technology (ICT). History, Geography, Design Technology, Art, Music and PE also play an important part in the children’s learning.
Building on their experiences from the early years, the further development of the basic skills of literacy and numeracy are taught through activities and practical involvement, leading to the acquisition of the key concepts.
The curriculum is supported by a variety of activities. There are school sports teams, and a junior choir and orchestra. Day visits take advantage of the many opportunities available in the Paris area for enriching your children’s education.
Key Stage 2
At Key Stage 2 the same core, and other subjects are continued, building again on the knowledge and skills acquired previously, but also taking account of individual needs to help to develop each child’s full potential, academically, physically, emotionally and socially.
The children who are working well above the overall level of their class or group will be given opportunities to add breadth and gain enrichment from their tasks, and will be encouraged to increase the depth of their learning, extending their output through complexity.
The curriculum is supported by a variety of day visits which exploit the many opportunities available in the Paris area for enriching the children’s learning. Towards the end of Year 6 pupils enjoy an activity week in the Ardeche in the south of France, where a variety of exciting outdoor pursuits are followed, in addition to a geographical study of the area.
