Educational Programme

Our holistic approach at the British School of Paris enables all students to meet their full potential, academic or otherwise.  The Junior School provides the following educational programme:

Nursery - Foundation Stage 1 (ages 3 & 4)
Learning, development and care at the BSP Nursery is facilitated by a variety of activities that young children from the age of 3 years enjoy.  Learning is based on both structured and free play giving the child a means of learning through discovery, development and investigation.  Learning activities include language and number work, to role play, art and craft as well as sand and water. Pupils are taught both English and French.

Our Nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework, part of the British Curriculum Guidance.

Reception – Foundation Stage 2 (ages 4 & 5)
Our aim in the Reception Year is to develop confident, happy children who are eager to learn and to share their experiences with others in a safe and secure environment that encourages exploration and self-expression, so laying down a firm base for the years of education to come.

Our Reception Year staff also use the Early Years Foundation Stage framework as the basis for the children’s learning.

The curriculum sets out the Early Learning Goals in each of these areas:

  • Personal, social and emotional development
  • Language and literacy
  • Knowledge and skills in mathematics
  • Knowledge and understanding of the world
  • Physical development
  • Creative development

In addition this busy programme is enriched by the same range of additional lessons as enjoyed by the older years.  These include a daily French lesson, PE lessons and music, all with our specialist staff.

Key Stage 1 (ages 5-7)
At Key Stage 1 the subjects taught are English, Mathematics and Science together with Information Communication Technology (ICT).   History, Geography, Design Technology, Art, Music and PE also play an important part in the children’s learning.

Building on their experiences from the early years, the further development of the basic skills of literacy and numeracy are taught through activities and practical involvement, leading to the acquisition of the key concepts.

Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11)
At Key Stage 2 the same core, and other subjects are continued, building again on the knowledge and skills acquired  previously, but also taking account of individual needs to help to develop each child’s full potential, academically, physically, emotionally and socially.

See the BSP Academic Programme Page for more information about the Curriculum.
